In 2015, the US Centers for Disease Control released a study showing that most public middle and high schools start before 8:30am—a finding that aligns with another study that found something like 93% of high schools and 83% of middle schools started before that time.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that teenagers aged 13 to 18 get eight to ten hours of sleep a night, and warns that those who don't get enough will be more likely to suffer depression-related symptoms, become unhealthy and/or overweight, be less inclined to engage in physical activity the next day, and perform worse in school (and at pretty much anything else they try to do).
