Though emerging as a matter of mainstream fascination and entertainment in the mid-2000s, with the near-simultaneous broadcast of topical (some might say exploitative) reality TV shows, hoarding has long been associated with depression and anxiety, PTSD, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

There's a spectrum of hoarding, ranging from somewhat messy to compulsively accumulative, in the latter case eventually reaching the point where the walls of one's home are no longer visible because of the piles of stuff the owner or renter has stashed there, and at which point the hoarder's quality of life has generally been diminished as a consequence of their hoarding activities.
