Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, was first concretely described in 1902 but has been floating around the psychological, neurological, and child-developmental ether since at least the 18th century. And while the terminology used and specifics of the condition have evolved over time, from "minimal brain damage" in the 1930s to "minimal brain disruption" in the 1950s to "attention-deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity" in the 1980s, the general idea is that some people—especially but not exclusively children—are hyperactive, impulsive, and inattentive at abnormal levels for their age.
